A kicker? A Kicker?? Yep, the Jets signed a kicker – but this is a good thing.
Catanzaro is 26 and coming off a down year in Arizona. He certainly cost the Cardinals a few games last year but this is very familiar to the situation in which the Jets brought in their previous kicker: Nick Folk.
In 2009, Folk missed 10 field goals for Dallas (made 18 of 28) and the Cowboys cut bait. Folk joined the Jets and converted on 30 of 39 in 2010. He has been a staple of the team until this offseason when he wasn’t worth his salary at age 32.
Prior to his 2016 slip, Catanzaro connected on 88% & 90% of his kicks in ’14 & ’15 respectively. The talent is there.
Catanzaro will have to compete for the main job in New York against Ross Martin [and possibly another camp leg], but should he earn the job, he will be younger, cheaper and have a stronger leg (career long of 60 vs Folk: 56). Another sign of competition at ALL positions for the Jets.
