On a day when the Jets added six new players to the fold via the draft, Mike Maccagnan announced Devin Smith would miss the 2017 to a torn ACL.
The second round pick from the 2015 class may not suit up for the Jets again. After adding two wide receivers in the draft and boasting a DEEP group, Smith may soon be looking for work on another team. It’s unfortunate, Smith could have brought some unique talents to the team. Debilitating injuries will always leave fans wondering, what could have been.
Mike Maccagnan continued to trade down on day three and finished with six draft picks. He also acquired a 2018 fifth round pick from the Cowboys.
With the six picks, Mac added, WR – Chad Hansen from California, TE – Jordan Leggett from Clemson, EDGE – Dylan Donohue from West Georgia, RB – Elijah McGuire from Louisiana Lafayette, CB – Jeremy Clark from Michigan & CB – Derrick Jones from Ole Miss. In the next week, you can expect a write up for each player.
The initial takeaway from the draft: Bowles and Maccagnan are on the same page. In spite of speculation from the Jets media that they don’t like each other, Maccagnan found players that Bowles wanted and needed. Poor safety play was as much a part of the secondary failures last season as Darrelle Revis’ regression. The addition of Maye and Adams (particularly Maye) were likely requests of Bowles. Jeremy Clark is a prototypical CB for Bowles defense. Additionally, reinvesting in the receivers is building up around the QB position. The team is doing their damnedest to give Hackenberg or Petty a chance to succeed.
The Jets will be a very competitive team this season. It will start in the next week or two and come into full effect at training camp. Every role is up for a grabs and the team will be better for it when the season starts. Don’t sleep on the Jets, they will beat teams that make mistakes and don’t bring their best.
